What are car suspensions?

How do suspensions work?
Suspensions are primarily made up of springs and dampers. It is part of the chassis that supports the car’s weight, helps maintain tire contact, helps the driver to direct the vehicle and makes a better gripping of tyres with the road. Most modern rear wheel cars possess a live axle and a deal axle.
When springs are abled, the stored potential energy is converted to kinetic energy by pushing down the wheel. On the other hand, the dampers help in dissipating the energy stored in the spring in the form of heat, thus help controlling the bounce when you drive on a bumpy road.
When do you need to check for suspension related issues?
Your suspension may be affected if any of these parts are damaged: air suspension, anti-roll bar and components, springs, rear axle, rear axle carriers, shock absorbers, springs, sub – frames, suspension arms and joints, suspension mountings, suspension spheres and x- members.

  • Poor wheel alignment that drifts your steering away from the centre. Bushings and control arms may also be affected and may cause handling problems along with excessive tyre wears and tears.
  • An ineffective shock absorber that creates more bounce and shakes.
  • Damaged spring that creates a clunking noise over bumps with one corner of your car being slightly depressed when parked on a levelled road.
  • When you hear a squeaking or a creaking sound, you may need to get your car’s ball joints checked.
